Necrosis is local death of tissue. It is the dry, black, leathery material that results from destruction of cells and blood vessels. Some chronic wounds may be covered with necrotic material that cannot be removed by normal cleansing or irrigation. If this necrosis is not removed it can delay healing.
Refer to infection section if antimicrobial therapy is considered necessary.
Stimulation of autolytic debridement through retention of moisture or by active continuous hydration of the wound.
- Create a moist wound healing environment to stimulate autolysis
- Hydrogel amorphous for cavities using a suitable secondary dressing
- Hydrogel dressing for superficial wounds, can be cut to size, fixed either with adhesive tape, transparent film or clinicians choice of secondary dressing
- Hydrocolloids can also be used for autolytic debridement and protection
